Dating & The "Morse Code" Signature
The specific mark on the back, consisting of the letters HB Quimper with two dots positioned directly beneath the city name, reveals the exact historical story of this piece:
• Period: This type of signature dates the plate with absolute certainty to the Interwar period (the 1920s to 1930s).
• The Meaning of the Dots:
The two dots served as an internal administrative code or "Morse code" within the La Hubaudière workshop. This unique combination was linked to the specific, individual *peinteur* (painter) who hand-painted the plate at the time.
• Anonymous Master:
Because internal factory records were largely lost over the years and during the war, the artist's actual name can no longer be traced.
However, the work was invariably performed by an experienced artisan, as large 32.5 cm plates featuring such complex central scenes of folk costumes were never entrusted to apprentices.
