Vintage African wooden Ancestor sculpture
The sculpture depicts a seated or crouching male figure (often identified as a chief, hunter, or royal ancestor, such as the culture hero Chibinda Ilunga).
Typical of the Chokwe style are the powerful, angular limbs, large hands and feet, and the highly distinctive, large headdress or hairstyle (the *cipenya-mutwe*) that symbolizes a leader's status.
The figure often holds a hand or an object to the mouth or chin.
